Waterstone Retail

When we got the call from Waterstone Retail, we were given several things to think about. First, we had very little time because of their deadline for a trade show. Second, we needed to get some nice dusk images of several locations. Dusk shots are more difficult because there is a narrow window of opportunity to get the light just right. Start too soon and you get, basically, daytime photos. Start too late and you're essentially trying to photograph at night. But for just a short while right as the sun sets and for a few minutes afterward, there is a perfect time. It's the Magic Window and everything goes from mundane to extraordinary in a blink of an eye...or the click of the shutter, really.

So how to do you photograph busy shopping centers? With a lot of patience and quick reflexes. Timing is everything. Just wait for all the rattletraps to vacate the parking lot and then click away! We actually had one vehicle pull into the lot, lift the hood and two guys started working on the car...right in front of our camera!

Sometimes you just have to take what you're given at the time and then enhance it after the fact. With the location above, we were faced with a broken sign, storm clouds that paid no attention to the weather report and just popped up out of nowhere, and a late day haze that made everything just look lifeless and dull. So we fixed the sign, enhanced the landscaping and trees, made the sky look the way we wished it had been while we were there, and removed the haze so that the buildings came in nice and clear.
